Hey Fam!
Everyone owns one, but very few know how to use it correctly.
iPhones definitely have the capability to take insane-looking footage. Trust me, I know what I am talking about.
The best way to prove this is that most creators you know on social media are using the newest iPhone models.
And so am I; 99% of my content on social media was taken on my iPhone 12. Not even the Pro version.
iPhones are generally easy to use, and so is the camera, but you have to consider a few key factors and work with them to create amazing-looking videos.
But enough of that, let’s dive into what works and what doesn’t.
Recording in 4K
Now, I personally record everything in 1080p 30fps. Why? Because it works.
I know a few friends and fellow creators who only film in 4K, but I personally find that it doesn’t make too big of a difference since Instagram compresses it to 1080p anyway. (But more on that later)
What I would recommend to you, though, is to film in 4K if the light situation is very bad. This might save you from having too much noise.
Export in 1080p 30fps
You are probably wondering, ‘why should I export in 1080p when I filmed in 4K?’.
This doesn’t seem logical, and maybe it isn’t, but what I found is that my video quality after uploading stays consistently the same if I export 1080p.
If, on the other hand, I export in 4K and upload it, Instagram compresses the footage to 1080p on its own. And by letting Instagram handle it, the footage mostly loses more resolution.
Re-play your Footage
I haven’t seen anyone else mention that, but I found that the video looks better if I replay the video once on the timeline of the social media app.
So if you upload to Instagram, you are opening the app, going to the upload section, and selecting the video. Then, when the video pops up and starts to play, let it play for once and then head to the next step. That’s it.
Also, it’s nice to just check one last time if everything looks right or if you’ve made some spelling mistakes, haha.
Fast Internet Connection
This is pretty self-explanatory.
Do your best to have a good and fast internet connection when you are uploading. This way, the content is being uploaded quicker, and you have minimal quality loss issues.
Only use the Optical Zooms
Now what even is optical zoom, you might be wondering. Unless you are a tech nerd.
When using optical zoom, the lens is being used to magnify the image. But if you are using digital zoom, the phone uses software to crop and enlarge the footage, which makes you lose a ton of quality.
On the iPhone and other smartphones, the optical preset zooms are normally 2x, 3x, or now 5x on the iPhone 15 Pro. If you film with something in between these, for example, 1.1x, then the digital zoom is activated.
Even if this only helped a single person of you fam, this would have still been worth sharing. No gatekeeping here 🤝🏻
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday night and have a great start into the new week.
Cheers, Max
